REVIEW: AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

What wounded Avengers: Age of Ultron?

This review can’t be the generic one pointing out what is good and bad of the movie, because the Avengers franchise is not a normal movie franchise. Noted 76% in Rotten tomatoes, many people are wondering if the movie could live to the hype of the predecessor. Me… I would give you the reasons why this movie is being hurt so much.

First of all I want to mention that I loved the movie. I felt like they were able to develop the camaraderie that started 3 years ago. They made Hawkeye awesome and yes, they made him the most relatable character in the team. They gave us a fun time mixed with some epicenes. Jaws dropped in more than one time

Now, let’s see what happened.

First of all, the marketing. At the beginning, Age of Ultron (AoU) was presented to us as a more darker that the one before. Which started to make people say: “Yes, this is great” but in the back of their head they felt like the franchise would take a Man of Steel tone. So they prepared to embrace this new path Marvel is taking us. At the end, the movie is not that dark and our villain was pretty much likable instead of being terrifying. Also, our trailers now days for this movies requires to give us some of the greatest moments of all (not all of them, but a few) Imagine going to see Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back knowing Darth Vader is Luke’s father, for sure the movie loses weight. So seeing the Hulk fighting Iron Man on the trailers and some other moments for sure makes the movie lose it’s cards under the sleeve.

Second of all, people stop caring about AoU the moment when they knew there was going to be a Civil War movie, Infinity Wars parts one and two. Yes, they want to see that what is happening now, but only to see how it ties to the next one. They want to see something that sets up to Civil War, but not too much so it doesn’t feel like a prequel, as The Amazing Spider-Man 2. So the feeling of experience this as a solo movie is now lost, because we want and know what is coming next.

Finally, the movie is too short for the story. When the movies made this superheroes become mainstream, nobody asked themselves “Hey, why does this characters have tones of comic books dedicated to what can be compress into a two hours movie?” Well because they need them. They have so much to explore, so much to tie. Avengers 2 is kind of disconnected from the first one and connected more to Captain America: Winter Soldier. This movie has to connect with 10 previous films and set up what is coming for the next five years. You can’t do that in 2 hours. Actually J. Whedon had a 3 hours and a half cut for AoU and this would have probably made our villain look more terrifying, our heroes more heroic and relatable and de plot even more rich. That’s why a show as Daredevil with a 13 hours run had the chance to develop the villains and heroes for a bigger pay of.

So this is my opinion why Age of Ultron had been hurt in the eyes of the spectators. Is the movie bad? NOT AT ALL. It is very enjoyable, having fun in quiet and loud moments. It will never recapture the first time we saw this team together on the screen, but they don’t have to, what we need is to get to know them better. My advise to you, let all this expectations at the door and just enjoy or dislike this movie on it’s own merits.
